{"id":76,"date":"2006-12-18T20:23:48","date_gmt":"2006-12-19T01:23:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pahighways.com\/blog\/?p=76"},"modified":"2023-06-29T20:09:02","modified_gmt":"2023-06-30T00:09:02","slug":"were-not-number-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pahighways.com\/blog\/2006\/12\/18\/were-not-number-1\/","title":{"rendered":"We&#8217;re Not Number 1!"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>The yearly survey of truck drivers and readers of <i>Overdrive<\/i> magazine has been released.\u00a0 I can now say, as well as the index page can now say, that Pennsylvania&#8217;s highways are no longer the worst in the country.\u00a0 Yes, you read that correctly. Pennsylvania&#8217;s highways are <b>no longer the worst in the country<\/b>. We&#8217;re not Number 1!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Pennsylvania has relinquished that title to Louisiana, and before you say it, it has nothing to do with Hurricane Katrina.\u00a0 While the storm did damage roadways along the coast, especially the Interstate 10 bridges that cross Lake Pontchartrain, the rest of the state has no excuse and in fact has bounced around the top five worst for years now.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Considering everything that is working against PennDOT:<br \/><br \/>1.\u00a0 Most if not all traffic between New England and the rest of the country pass through the state<br \/>2.\u00a0 Having to maintain the same amount of state routes that is in all of New England<br \/>3.\u00a0 Freeze-thaw cycle<br \/>4.\u00a0 Federal highway money being siphoned off to prop up mass transit<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>It is not as if PennDOT is in the throes of their fiscal crisis of the 1970s and 1980s.\u00a0 They have been building new expressways such as US 222 in Reading and rebuilding highways such as the Fort Washington Expressway.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pahighways.com\/images\/blog\/i99rehabilitation.jpg\" alt=\"Projects like I-99 rehabilitation mean we're not number 1 in worst roads this year.\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>When it comes to snow removal and surface treatment, they are on their game.\u00a0 Just recently, there was a small snow event that came through western Pennsylvania.\u00a0 The state routes were clear and traffic was moving fine, but once onto the city streets of Latrobe, it was like a skating rink.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Again this year, the article mentioned myself along with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pahighways.com\/\">website<\/a>.\u00a0 The one thing I did not like about the article labeling Pennsylvania Highways a &#8220;watchdog site.&#8221; The only way that it is that, is because I watch what they do, and I can change the information here accordingly.
