SIGNAL INDICATIONS THAT DO NOT CONTROL TURNING MOVEMENTS
Two primary signal faces shall be provided on each approach.

The relative positions of signal sections in a vertically-arranged signal, from top to bottom, shall be:

  • CIRCULAR RED
  • CIRCULAR YELLOW
  • CIRCULAR GREEN
  • Straight-through GREEN ARROW
  • Steady left-turn YELLOW ARROW
  • Flashing left-turn YELLOW ARROW
  • Left-turn GREEN ARROW
  • Steady right-turn YELLOW ARROW
  • Flashing right-turn YELLOW ARROW
  • Right-turn GREEN ARROW

  • CIRCULAR RED
  • CIRCULAR YELLOW

All red signal indications shall be located to the left of all signal sections that display yellow signal indications and green signal indications.

SIGNAL INDICATIONS FOR PERMISSIVE ONLY MODE LEFT TURNS
During a permissive left-turn movement, signal faces for through traffic on the opposing approach shall simultaneously display green or steady yellow signal indications.  During a protected left-turn movement, the signal faces for through traffic on the opposing approach shall simultaneously display circular red indications and pedestrian signal heads shall display a steady DON'T WALK.

SIGNAL INDICATIONS FOR PROTECTED ONLY MODE LEFT TURNS
Signal indications should be capable of displaying only one of the three indications at any given time (steady red arrow, steady yellow arrow, and steady green arrow).

Under emergency conditions, a five-section head for left turns should flash the same color as the rest of the approach, while a three-section head for left turns on the yellowing flashing approach should go dark.

SIGNAL INDICATIONS WITH FLASHING YELLOW ARROW FOR PERMISSIVE ONLY MODE LEFT TURNS
While approved for use, the Department of Transportation does not recommend using a three-section signal for flashing yellow arrow implementation and neither it nor the four-section signal are to be used for right turns.

* These faces would be used if it is intended that a right turn on red after stop be permitted; a Right Turn Signal (R10-10R) sign shall be used with these faces if the red indication is not visibility limited.
