History:

The first segment of this route was signed in 1959 on the Susquehanna Trail between the Maryland state line and US 111 just south of Country Club Road south of York.  It was signed to replace the US 111 designation, which was moved onto the newly completed Harrisburg-York-Baltimore Expressway.

In 1960, the route was decommissioned on its original alignment and instead extended to Interstate 83/US 111 north of North York.  It was also extended south to Interstate 83/US 111 over the section of expressway that was built between 1957 and 1959 as US 111 had been moved out of York and placed on the newly completed bypass around the city.  A year later, the route was decommissioned and replaced with the current Interstate Business Loop 83 designation.
