History: Signed in 1958 to replace the US 62 designation that had been transferred to the Shenango Valley Freeway that opened that year.  In 1967, the highway was widened and a median installed from the City of Sharon line to US 62.  Until 1998, the designation's western terminus was Irvine Avenue at the Ohio state line.  That year, under the request of Sharon's mayor, the designation was changed to its current alignment.
