History: | Signed in 1970 to replace the US 30 designation. In
1971, the western terminus was moved four miles west to Columbia. In
1973, the western terminus was moved to its current location from US 30 in
Columbia. A median was installed in 1974 at PA 24.
During the beginning of May 2010, crews hauled a 250-ton generator from its former home at Three Mile Island. The convoy traversed PA 462 on May 2 between PA 441 in Columbia and PA 24 in York, where it turned to continue the journey. Resurfacing work began on September 18, 2017 on East Market Street in York. The $2.39 million project took place between Harrison Street and PA 24 over two construction seasons, and came to a close in July 2018. |

The reason for its decommissioning in 1961 was to avoid duplication of the number with then proposed Interstate 480 outside Philadelphia. It became a moot point when Interstate 80S was changed to Interstate 76, and Interstate 480 was changed to Interstate 476. |
